Psychotherapist vs psychologist – Which one is right for you?
Psychotherapists and psychologists are both mental health professionals, but their education, working methods, and services differ. Many people don't know which one to turn to. This guide clearly compares these professions so you can choose the right help for your situation.
Who is a psychotherapist?
A psychotherapist has completed a separate psychotherapy training program approved by Valvira (3–4 years). The title of psychotherapist is a protected title in Finland. A psychotherapist's background can be in psychology, medicine, nursing, or another healthcare profession. Psychotherapists focus on long-term therapeutic relationships where mental health challenges, traumas, and life problems are addressed in depth through a specific therapeutic framework (e.g., CBT, psychodynamic, integrative).
Who is a psychologist?
A psychologist has completed a master's degree in psychology. The psychologist title is a licensed professional title. Psychologists work in a wide range of settings: health centers, occupational health, schools, hospitals, and private practice. A psychologist's work may include assessments, brief interventions, neuropsychological testing, and counseling. Some psychologists are also psychotherapists if they have completed additional psychotherapy training.

When to choose which?
Choose a psychotherapist when you need a long-term, regular therapeutic relationship. Psychotherapy is particularly suited for treating depression, anxiety disorders, traumas, personality disorders, and recurring life problems. Kela rehabilitation psychotherapy requires that the therapist is a Valvira-registered psychotherapist.
Choose a psychologist when you need an assessment (e.g., neuropsychological testing, ADHD evaluation), brief support for a life situation, work capacity evaluation, or low-threshold talk support. Occupational health psychologist visits are often free.
Many professionals are both
It's good to know that many psychologists have also completed psychotherapy training and work as both psychologists and psychotherapists. In that case, they have broad expertise in both assessments and long-term therapy. You can verify a therapist's qualifications in Valvira's Julkiterhikki register.
Costs and Kela reimbursement
A psychotherapist's session typically costs €80–120. Kela rehabilitation psychotherapy reimburses €57.60 per session, making the out-of-pocket cost about €22–62. A private psychologist's session costs €80–150 and does not qualify for direct Kela reimbursement. In the public sector (health centers, occupational health), psychologist services are often free or inexpensive.
