Kela Rehabilitative Psychotherapy
Kela reimburses rehabilitative psychotherapy for people aged 16–67 whose mental health disorder threatens their ability to work or study: €57.60 per individual session, up to 80 sessions a year and 3 years. You need at least 3 months of treatment and a psychiatrist's B or BC statement. Apply to Kela before therapy starts.
How to apply in three steps
- 1.Get treatment and a psychiatrist's B or BC statement (or a rehabilitation plan): you must have been treated for at least 3 months, and the statement may be no more than a year old.
- 2.Choose a Kela-approved therapist, for example with Kela's service provider search.
- 3.Apply to Kela with form KU 131 in OmaKela before therapy starts (no earlier than 2 months before the start).
Steps in detail: applying for Kela therapy step by step. Kela reimburses part of the cost and you pay the rest, see psychotherapy pricing.
Requirements
- 1.You are covered by Finnish health insurance and aged 16–67
- 2.You have a properly diagnosed mental health disorder that threatens your ability to work or study
- 3.You have received appropriate treatment for at least 3 months after the diagnosis (a diagnosis or statement visit alone is not enough)
- 4.You have a B-statement or rehabilitation plan with a psychiatrist's assessment of the diagnosis and rehabilitation need (no more than a year old)
If you are under 26 when you apply for the first year, you belong to the youth group for the whole therapy of up to three years.
Reimbursement per session (kela.fi, checked 1 Oct 2026)
- Individual therapy: €57.60
- Group therapy: €42.05
- Family or couples therapy: €63.91 (1 h) or €95.87 (1.5 h)
- The reimbursement is usually less than the therapist's fee, so you pay the difference
Kela does not reimburse, for example, therapy that combines individual and group sessions, assessment visits or cancelled visits (Kela benefit guidelines, 11 Sep 2026).
Duration
- Up to 3 years, granted one year at a time
- Up to 80 sessions a year and 200 sessions in total
Where to get treatment and a B-statement
Seek care at a health centre, occupational health, student health care or a private doctor. After at least 3 months of treatment, a psychiatrist assesses the need for rehabilitative psychotherapy and writes a B-statement.
Amounts and conditions can change. Check the current details on Kela's website.
