Parenting and Therapy – Support for Parenting Challenges
In brief
Parenting is one of life's most rewarding but also most demanding tasks. Burnout, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy are common –and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Therapy helps parents cope better and build a safer relationship with their child. In Finland, family counseling centers offer free support.
When does a parent benefit from therapy?
- Parenting burnout: constant fatigue, irritability, and feelings of inadequacy
- Postpartum depression or anxiety
- Conflicts about parenting with partner
- Own childhood trauma activated by parenting
- Child's behavioral challenges are overwhelming
- Divorce and shared custody challenges
Forms of support for parents
Individual therapy for parent
Processing one's own coping, emotions, and possible mental health symptoms. Especially important if parenting activates one's own unprocessed childhood experiences.
Family therapy
Improving family interaction. Helps understand family dynamics and find new ways to function together.
Family counseling center (free)
A free municipal service for families. Offers parenting counseling, family therapy, and crisis support. No referral needed.
Couples therapy
Caring for the relationship is also caring for parenting. Helps with conflicts about parenting and division of responsibilities.
Perinatal mental health
Postpartum depression affects about 10–15% of new parents. It is treatable and seeking help is important for both the parent's and baby's wellbeing.
