Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A mental health condition involving recurring obsessive thoughts and related compulsive actions or rituals.
What is OCD?
In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), you experience recurring, distressing thoughts (obsessions) that you try to manage with certain actions or rituals (compulsions). For example, you might wash your hands repeatedly or check locks over and over.
How does OCD manifest?
Common obsessions: - Fear of contamination (dirt, germs) - Fear of harming yourself or others - Need for symmetry or order - Forbidden or disturbing thoughts
Common compulsions: - Washing and cleaning - Checking - Counting and arranging - Mental rituals
How is OCD treated?
The most effective treatment for OCD is exposure and response prevention (ERP): - You gradually face anxiety-provoking situations - You learn to refrain from performing compulsions - Anxiety naturally decreases over time - Medication (SSRIs) can enhance therapy
OCD is very treatable. The therapist should be specifically trained in OCD treatment — don't hesitate to ask about this.
