Sleep Disorders
Recurring problems with falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleep quality that affect daily energy levels.
What are Sleep disorders?
Sleep disorders refer to recurring problems with falling asleep, waking during the night, or poor sleep quality. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder — about one-third of Finnish people experience it at some point in their lives.
How do sleep problems affect mental health?
Sleep and mental health are closely connected: - Insomnia increases the risk of depression and anxiety - Depression and anxiety in turn worsen sleep - Prolonged insomnia can impair memory and concentration - Fatigue makes it harder to regulate emotions
How are Sleep disorders treated?
The most effective treatment for insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I): - Sleep hygiene — improving sleep habits - Stimulus control — associating the bed only with sleep - Sleep restriction — improving sleep efficiency - Relaxation techniques - Changing harmful thought patterns
Medication is used for short-term relief when needed. Therapy offers a longer-lasting solution.
